Australian Opal Belemnite 17.24cts

A rare and captivating naturally opalized belemnite from Australia — an ancient squid-like marine creature transformed over 100 million years into shimmering precious opal. This beautifully formed specimen displays the classic tapered rostrum shape of the belemnite, graduating elegantly in both width and thickness.

A wonderful addition to any opal or fossil collection, and high-quality belemnites like this also make extraordinary pendants.

Notes

Belemnites were squid-like marine animals that lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods — a time span of approximately 135 million years. They became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous, around the same time as the dinosaurs. Their hard internal rostrum (the bullet-shaped guard) is what survives as a fossil, and in rare cases these have been replaced by precious opal.
