Australian Opal Belemnite 1.65cts - stunning multi colour Collector Fossil

A stunning natural opal cut from an Australian opal belemnite — the fossilised remains of an ancient marine creature that lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, approximately 135 million years ago. At 12mm long, this stone is currently a single piece, but it could be cut in half to create a matching pair of earring stones — a rare opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind matched set from a single prehistoric opal.

High quality belemnites also make beautiful pendants and are a wonderful addition to any opal or fossil collection.

About Opal Belemnites

Belemnites were marine animals — the closest living relatives of modern squid and cuttlefish. Unlike modern squid, they had a hard internal skeleton; in the animal's tail, this formed a bullet-shaped structure called a rostrum. These rostra are the parts found as fossils. When buried in opal-bearing sediments, the organic material was replaced by precious opal over millions of years, creating the extraordinary opal belemnites we find today.
