Notes

Belemnites were marine creatures — relatives of modern squid and cuttlefish — that thrived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, a span of approximately 135 million years. They became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous, around the same time as the dinosaurs. What remains is the rostrum: a bullet-shaped internal skeleton that fossilized as sediment hardened around it over millions of years. When opal replaces the original material, the result is one of nature's most extraordinary collectibles. Ethically sourced from Australia.
