Collection: Andamooka Opal Matrix (Treated)

Andamooka matrix opal is one of Australia's most fascinating and misunderstood gemstones — and once you understand it, it's impossible not to love it.

Mined from the ancient opal fields of Andamooka in South Australia, matrix opal in its raw state is pale and understated. But through a centuries-old treatment process — a careful infusion of sugar and acid that penetrates the stone's natural porosity — the background transforms from white to deep, rich black. The result is a stone with the dramatic colour play of black opal, at a fraction of the price.

Each stone in this collection has been individually cut, polished, and selected for its colour and character. No two are alike.

What makes Andamooka matrix special?

  • Unique origin — Ethically sourced from Andamooka, South Australia, one of the world's most storied opal fields
  • Traditional treatment — The sugar-and-acid carbon process has been used since the 1960s and is widely accepted in the gem trade
  • Black opal look, accessible price — Deep dark backgrounds intensify the play-of-colour without the black opal price tag
  • Distinct character — Andamooka matrix is quite different from Queensland boulder matrix or Lightning Ridge matrix — each region produces something unique

We also carry rough matrix opal for those who'd like to cut and treat their own stones — and we're happy to share the treatment recipe. It's a rewarding process.

Rainbow matrix is also available — a beautiful variation with a slightly coarser texture, typically finished with liquid glass for a smooth, lustrous result.
