Andamooka Opal Matrix (Treated)

Andamooka matrix opal is one of Australia’s most fascinating and misunderstood gemstones — and once you understand it, it’s hard not to love it.

When mined from the ancient fields of Andamooka in South Australia, matrix opal is pale and understated. But through a traditional treatment process — a careful cooking with sugar and acid that penetrates the stone’s natural porosity — the background transforms from white to deep black, intensifying the opal’s colour and bringing its play-of-colour dramatically to life. The result is a stone with the rich, dark drama of black opal, at a fraction of the price.

It’s worth noting that Andamooka matrix is quite different from Queensland boulder matrix or Lightning Ridge matrix — each region produces something unique, and Andamooka’s treated matrix has a character all its own.

Rainbow matrix is a variation worth exploring too — slightly coarser and harder to polish, it’s often finished with liquid glass for a beautifully smooth result.
