How to Care for Your Opals - A Complete Guide

Opals are one of nature's most breathtaking gemstones, but they do require a little extra care to keep them looking their best. Follow these simple guidelines to protect your opal and enjoy its beauty for generations to come.

Avoid Extreme Heat and Sudden Temperature Changes

Opals contain a small amount of water within their silica structure — typically 3–10%. Sudden changes in temperature or prolonged exposure to heat can cause an opal to crack or "craze" (develop fine surface cracks). Keep your opal away from direct sunlight for extended periods, hair dryers, and hot water.

Keep Opals Away from Chemicals

Household chemicals, perfumes, hairsprays, and cleaning products can damage the surface of your opal. Always put your opal jewellery on last when getting ready, and remove it before cleaning or swimming in chlorinated pools.

Store Opals Carefully

Store your opal separately from other gemstones and jewellery to avoid scratching. A soft cloth pouch or lined jewellery box is ideal. If you live in a very dry climate, you can place a damp cloth in the storage container to maintain a little moisture around solid opals.

Clean Gently

Clean your opal with a soft, damp cloth and mild soap if needed. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners, and abrasive cloths. For opal doublets and triplets, avoid soaking in water as this can cause the layers to separate over time.

Wear with Care

Opal rates 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it softer than diamonds, sapphires, and rubies. Avoid wearing opal rings during heavy manual work or activities where they may be knocked or scratched. Opal pendants and earrings are a great everyday option as they're less exposed to impact.

Solid Opals vs Doublets and Triplets

Solid opals are the most durable and require the least maintenance. Doublets and triplets have a protective layer but should be kept away from prolonged water exposure. If you're unsure which type you have, feel free to contact us and we'll help you out.

With the right care, your Australian opal will remain a stunning, vibrant gemstone for a lifetime — and beyond.
