Opal Triplet vs Doublet vs Solid Opal — What’s the Difference?
Share
Introduction
One of the most common questions we get at Opal Essence is: "What's the difference between a solid opal, a doublet, and a triplet?" It's a great question — and the answer matters a lot when it comes to value, durability, and care. Here's everything you need to know.
Solid Opal
A solid opal is exactly what it sounds like — 100% natural opal all the way through, with no backing or capping. It is the most valuable form of opal and the most sought after by collectors and jewellers.
- Value: Highest — a fine solid opal can be worth many times more than a doublet or triplet of the same size
- Durability: Good, but opal is a relatively soft stone (5.5–6.5 on the Mohs scale) and should be treated with care
- Care: Avoid prolonged exposure to water, harsh chemicals, and extreme temperature changes
- Best for: Collectors, fine jewellery, investment pieces
Opal Doublet
An opal doublet consists of a thin slice of natural opal bonded to a dark backing material — typically black potch (common opal) or ironstone. The dark backing enhances the play of colour, making the opal appear more vivid and brilliant.
- Value: Moderate — significantly less than a solid opal, but contains genuine natural opal
- Durability: Good in normal wear, but avoid soaking in water as this can cause the layers to separate over time
- Care: Clean with a damp cloth only — do not submerge in water or use ultrasonic cleaners
- Best for: Everyday jewellery, affordable opal pieces, wholesale components
Opal Triplet
An opal triplet is made up of three layers: a dark backing, a very thin slice of natural opal in the middle, and a clear dome cap on top (usually quartz or glass). The cap protects the opal and magnifies the colour beneath.
- Value: Most affordable — the opal layer is very thin, but the colour can be stunning
- Durability: The cap provides good protection for the opal layer, but like doublets, avoid prolonged water exposure
- Care: Clean with a damp cloth only — avoid soaking, ultrasonic cleaners, and steam cleaning
- Best for: Fashion jewellery, budget-conscious buyers, high-volume wholesale
How to Tell Them Apart
The easiest way to identify which type you have is to look at the stone from the side:
- Solid opal — uniform opal colour all the way through, no visible layers
- Doublet — you'll see a join line between the opal and the dark backing
- Triplet — you'll see three distinct layers: backing, opal, and clear cap. The dome cap is often visible from the side profile.
If you submerge a triplet in water, the cap becomes more transparent and the layers become even more visible — a reliable test.
Which Should You Buy?
It depends entirely on your budget and purpose:
- For a collector's piece or fine jewellery — always choose a solid opal
- For everyday jewellery or wholesale components — a doublet offers great value with genuine opal
- For fashion jewellery or budget pieces — a triplet delivers beautiful colour at an accessible price
All three types contain genuine Australian opal — the difference is in how much opal is present and how it is presented. A reputable seller will always disclose which type you are buying.
