Matrix opal (cut stones - Andamooka)

This is what they call the mother of opal. It is said to be mined prematurely, before the opal has had enough time to fully develop. Over the years we have learnt how to treat it in a sugar and acid solution. This does not add any colour to the stone, it only darkens the background from white to black. The finished product is incredible, it looks like a black opal. Today it is very popular. For the very best matrix it is only $50 per carat. Other grades available; $2.50; $4.50; $15.00 and $30.00 per carat. They come in ovals, rectangles, squares, diamonds and pairs.
